Vernon Phoenix is an RCUK Academic Fellow in the Department of Geographical and Earth Sciences at the University of Glasgow. Vern’s research centers around the themes of environmental geochemistry and geomicrobiology. His work in this area originally began in the field of exobiology, examining how Earth’s earliest life forms (bacteria) mediated mineral precipitation billions of years ago. His work now focuses on current environmental issues, examining controls on the transport and fate of heavy metals and nanoparticles in the natural environment. He is particularly interested in developing remediation strategies for these pollutants, and utilizing novel tools such as MRI to examine their transport in water rock systems.
