Biomineralisation in Soils

A number of different biomineralisation processes, including calcite, phosphate and manganese oxide formation processes and reductive precipitation, are being investigated and evaluated with respect to their capability for trapping radionuclides in solid form. Based on these experiments specific biomineralisation processes that show potential for in situ remediation will be studied further using column experiments to investigate the immobilisation of radionuclides through selected geological matrices, under saturated and unsaturated hydraulic flow conditions.
